The Story Behind Genuine Risk Road

Visitors making their way to our Santa Ynez estate often pause when they see the name of the road leading to the property: Genuine Risk Road. It’s a name that tends to spark curiosity — and for good reason.

As it turns out, the road carries a fascinating connection to the rich equestrian history of the Santa Ynez Valley and one of the most celebrated racehorses in American history: Genuine Risk.

In 1980, Genuine Risk made history as only the second filly ever to win the Kentucky Derby, stunning the racing world with her speed, determination, and unforgettable performance. Even decades later, she remains one of the most iconic names in thoroughbred racing.

Long before the Santa Ynez Valley became widely known for its vineyards and wine tasting experiences, the region was deeply rooted in ranching and equestrian culture. Rolling hills, open land, and expansive ranch properties made the Valley a natural home for horses, breeding farms, and training facilities. That heritage still shapes the character of the area today.

While Santa Barbara wine country has evolved into one of California’s premier wine destinations, the Valley has managed to preserve much of its agricultural and rural identity. It’s part of what makes this region feel so special — and so different from many other wine regions.

Driving along Genuine Risk Road today, guests are surrounded by vineyard-covered hillsides, ancient oak trees, and sweeping views that reflect both the beauty and history of the land. For us, the name serves as a small but meaningful reminder that this property is part of a much larger story — one deeply connected to the landscape, traditions, and spirit of the Santa Ynez Valley.

At Grassini Family Vineyards, we’ve always believed that great wine is shaped not only by climate and soil, but also by a strong sense of place. From the estate vineyards we farm in Happy Canyon to the road that leads guests to our property, every part of the experience reflects the character of this distinctive region.
